Dread Skeeter mosquito control by Mosquito Squad of Mount Laurel

Mosquito Squad of Mt. Laurel kills ticks.

Among the states where Lyme disease is prevalent, New Jersey is one of the eight states where 90 percent of all cases are reported nationwide. Lyme disease is a dangerous and debilitating disease which in some cases can change the quality of life for long periods of time of  those infected. Lyme disease is primarily spread via the deer tick, which is one of the tiniest tick species in the world, measuring in some case only 1/16th of an inch across in adulthood. This tiny and dangerous vectors of tick-borne disease is definitely something to worry about here in the garden state.

Lyme disease begins its journey to us by an infected deer tick. The ticks themselves actually get the disease from mice, and not deer, contrary to popular belief. The deer tick feeds on the mouse which is carrying the bacteria and thus becomes infected and able to transmit the disease to people by feeding on us. These same ticks like to feed on deer as well. The deer tick is also known as the black-legged tick, and bear tick  in some areas around the country.

deertick

In comparison to this penny you can see just how small a deer tick is.

Lyme disease is then spread to people from the saliva within the tick, during feeding. This disease can start to display symptoms in as little as two days following the onset of infection through the tick bite. Symptoms can include rash at the sight of the tick bite and other areas of the body, fever, chill, sore throat, ear aches, swollen glands, joint pain,  headaches and stiffness in the neck.  Lyme disease is most successfully  treated early, and if left undiagnosed can lead to heart and nervous system disorders, or an acute form of the disease known as chronic Lyme disease or post Lyme disease syndrome. If you or a loved one feels they have been bitten by an infected tick, early detection and diagnosis is key. Always contact your physician at the first sign of illness.

Of course, the best way to avoid tick-borne illnesses such as this is to avoid being bitten by a tick altogether. Exercising common sense is a good starting point, such as avoiding deep, wooded areas where tick infestations are more likely to be present. Monitoring yourself with frequent tick checking following each exposure to the outdoors, and keeping the areas around you home and yard free of thickets, debris and overgrown foliage. Instilling the expertise of a licensed professional to spray and use a tick abatement device is also recommended.

tick tubes

Tick tubes kill the ticks at their source.

Mosquito Squad of Mt. Laurel uses barrier spraying to kill ticks and Damminix tick tubes as part of their tick abatement program. These tick tubes work by killing the ticks at their source. Each tick tube contains cotton treated with permethrin. Permethrin is safe for humans and mammals, but kills the tick. The mice use this cotton in their bedding, and thus exposes the deer tick to the permethrin and kills the tick-stopping the cycle of disease before it can be transmitted to our pets, or us. Damminix tick tubes are environmentally friendly, and are approved by the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency). Field studies and extensive testing tells us these tick tubes reduce the chance of you or your family being exposed to a potentially Lyme disease carrying tick by 10 fold.

Mosquito Squad of Mt. Laurel takes on the fierce Asian tiger mosquito head on

Mosquito Squad of Mt. Laurel kills and prevents mosquitoes

The impact mosquitoes have on our lives is astounding. From the many diseases and illnesses they pass on  to us and our pets to the way they can wreak havoc on our outdoor enjoyment. There are over 3,000 species of mosquitoes worldwide. 150 of those species are found in North America and 63 of those species are found in New Jersey. New Jersey is actually known as “the mosquito state”. With that in mind, Mosquito Squad of Mt. Laurel is dedicated to making our residents aware of mosquitoes and mosquito-borne illness and arm them with the knowledge to prevent both.

Mosquito Squad of Mt. Laurel kills mosquitoes dead

Among the most invasive and aggressive species of mosquito found in New Jersey is the Asian tiger mosquito, ( Aedes albopictus). This mosquito was first introduced into North America in 1985  inside a shipment of tires  from Asia delivered to Harris County, which is in Houston, Texas. The public health service  act of 1988 actually now requires that shipments of tires coming into the United States from countries which have Asian tiger mosquitoes , fumigate, clean and dry the tires before they are shipped to avoid further infestation into North America.  Since that fateful delivery this mosquito has spread like wildfire all over the United States. The mosquito is named for its native land of Asia but also the black and white striping that cover the body of the female Asian tiger mosquito which resembles the stripes of a tiger. The aggressive nature this mosquito displays when feeding is true to its namesake as well. The Asian tiger has been reported to “swarm” its victims and  this mosquito has a voracious appetite and will feed off anything with blood, often feeding off its prey several times in before getting full.

The Asian Tiger Mosquito

This mosquito is also widely referred to as the “forest day” mosquito because unlike other mosquitoes that usually only feed in the evening or right at dusk, the Asian tiger mosquito feeds throughout the day. This in itself brings on a whole new realm of mosquito. From our experience we are accustomed to mosquito biting times being in the late afternoon or evening. This mosquito can bite you as you get in the car on your way to work in the morning, as you leave at lunchtime to run errands, as you push your child in the swing mid-day and all during the morning, noon, and night.

Mosquito prevention is the key to warding off mosquito-borne illness

As is the case with most mosquitoes, the Asian tiger mosquito is a known vector of mosquito-borne illness.  This mosquito is a known vector of EEE ( Eastern Equine Encephalitis) which rarely affects humans and mainly affects animals and is very prevalent among equine species such as horses, ponies, mules and donkeys. This disease has brought many a horse lover and breeder to its knees, in some cases even affecting a persons livelihood of those who raise thoroughbreds or other distinct breed of horse as their career. The Asian tiger mosquito is also suspected of being a vector for West Nile virus as well. West Nile is a deadly virus with symptoms that can range from mild to severe. If left untreated the virus can turn into West Nile encephalitis as well as West Nile meningitis.

There are many ways to prevent the Asian tiger mosquito and mosquito-borne illness from affecting you and your family. Here at Mosquito Squad of Mt. Laurel we recommend frequent checks of your lawn and garden areas to make sure there is no places available for a mosquito to lay eggs. Any containers, planters, bottles, cans, or children’s playthings that can accumulate moisture should be tossed out or tipped over. Keeping yard waste like brush piles and debris out of your yard is also a good preventative measure as well. Make sure to keep your yard trimmed and mowed. Having a licensed professional spray your property during the mosquito season for mosquito control is also a good idea. Most importantly if you think you may be infected or sick from a mosquito, don’t hesitate to call your doctor immediately. Diagnosing and treating mosquito-borne illness quickly is key to making sure it is treated properly and doesn’t have time to generate further problems.

Dread Skeeter for Mosquito Squad

Dread Skeeter of Mosquito Squad tells Mosquitoes "bite me".

Would you pay about $3 a day to not have the worry of mosquitoes and ticks the entire season? For the same price as that fancy espresso latte’ you’re sipping on? The answer to most of us would be a undoubtedly YES.

Mosquito Squad of Mt. Laurel can spray your entire premise to ensure you stay mosquito and tick free this season by setting you up on our rotation to spray every 21 days throughout the entire season. We spray your entire perimeter each time we visit, not just the lawn, like many other companies do. We spray your mulch, ivy, bushes, around your deck, the lower part of all your trees and if you have a pool, we spray around that as well. If you have a garden we treat this area with our all natural spray. Mosquito Squad of Mt. Laurel does not spray your flowers and we are careful not to treat around any areas that have fish such as koi ponds. Mosquito Squad also never harms beneficial pollinators such as honeybees, we avoid treating areas that contain blossoms where those pollinators collect nectar and pollen.

Mosquito Squad of Mount Laurel uses the same active ingredient that is found in your lice shampoos and tick collars. Treatment is safe for your domesticated pets as long as they are not in the yard when we spray. Each treatment we apply will have a residual of 21 days, so staying on our rotation cycle during the spring and summer months can ensure you and your family’s happiness and reduces the risk of dangerous mosquitoes and ticks.

Children and pets usually spend more time outdoors, so they are more at risk of contracting a dangerous insect-borne illness such as Rocky Mountain spotted fever, Lyme disease, Encephalitis , Ehrlichiosis and heartworms in pets. These groups are more vulnerable as well for the illness to become life threatening.

The spray itself kills mosquitoes and ticks on contact and then the residue on the plants will kill the new mosquitoes and ticks that enter your yard. Our service is automatic, so you don’t have to think about it, or call for scheduling . As a matter of fact, our service is effortless and it probably won’t even cross your mind with the absence of mosquitoes biting you.

If you have special circumstances that put you at risk for tick exposure such as property adjacent to the woods, property that contains a wood fence, property which has dense ground covering or dense trees and shrubbery, property which contains a brush, wood or compost pile and pets that are allowed outdoors, talk to your Mosquito Squad of Mt. Laurel representative about special safety measures that can help reduce tick exposure.

As we all know Memorial Day is just a few short weeks away. Memorial Day was originally referred to as “Decoration Day”, we celebrate it now as Memorial Day in remembrance for those who have perished in our nations service. Not only is this day a day to be humbled and proud to be an American, it has become a time to gather round the backyard with family and friends , play games, swap stories, laugh and have a barbecue.

Can you imagine having a Memorial Day that ends up being memorable to your guests for all the wrong reasons? It happens frequently without proper planning for that special day of outdoor fun. Sure, you have prepared a sumptuous feast of Filet Mignon on the grill, a huge salad with all the trimmings, homemade yeast rolls, and even prepared ice cubes for the lemonade filled with fresh fruit. Your new patio and deck are decorated with beautiful flowers and festive decorations for the occasions. You even went out and purchased that gas grill you’ve been yearning for in lieu of the event. Everything is perfect…. but is it?

You have invited almost all of your neighbors, family and friends to the event. Now everyone has arrived, and assembled in the backyard to begin the festivities. The children are playing volleyball, the adults are having a great time, and the grill is fired up. Then just as dusk arrives, you hear the first of many “SWATS” as your guests begin to get bitten by the mosquitoes that have arrived for their own “sumptuous feast”.

Your much-anticipated ”get-together” has just became a “gone-together” because your guests have decided to leave for the other party in their neighborhood. Y’know the party your neighbor three doors down is having?  Same great food, same fun and games, the only difference is they contacted Mosquito Squad of Mt. Laurel  prior to their backyard event and their property is now mosquito free.

(You may be curious as to how I know they called Mosquito Squad of Mt. Laurel? Because I left the party as well and went to the party of the neighbor who was wise enough to call  Mosquito Squad of Mt. Laurel  ahead to schedule a treatment.)

Mosquito Squad of Mount Laurel – If You Can’t Beat Them, Join Them

Have you ever heard the old saying “if you can’t beat them, join them”? That is exactly what I did when I was searching for a company here in Mount Laurel to treat my lawn and yard for ticks. I have a natural wetland in my backyard and this area is not only a nirvana for mosquitoes but also for ticks because of the long grass that are common in a wetland setting.

I know first hand about the dangers of ticks, and especially the tick-borne illness’ that can inflict us. I suffered from Rocky Mountain spotted Fever a few years ago and didn’t catch it on time and now suffer permanent ramifications from the illness. Then again last year I thought I had another tick bite. Initially my physician did not take me seriously about the possibility of having another tick-borne illness. When my doctor finally tested me I was diagnosed with Ehrlichiosis.  Ehrlichiosis ( pronounced err-lick-ee-o-sis) is a bacterial infection  found all over the U.S. that is spread by the lone star tick, deer tick and the dog tick.

When the second illness was confirmed I had already been on weekly injections for five and a half years for the rocky mountain spotted fever. The rocky mountain spotted fever had already progressed to chronic by the time it was caught. The ehrlichiosis was transitioning to chronic when it was diagnosed but was caught early enough to treat with antibiotics. The rocky mountain spotted fever, along with the weekly injections to keep the disease in check have made it difficult for me to live in the manner I always had. Five years ago I ran a triathlon and now I cannot even run. The disease has also caused inflammation of my large joints and without the injections there are some days I can’t even take my hands above my head. My life has changed dramatically from the active lifestyle I had previously before these tick-borne illness’ invaded my body and life. The long term prognosis is frustratingly unknown as well, with side effects such as lymphoma , memory loss and loss of energy.

After the diagnosis of both the rocky mountain spotted fever and the ehrlichiosis I searched in vain for a company to treat my lawn and yard area for ticks. After an exhaustive search, I decided to buy a company that could properly treat for ticks, so I started Mosquito Squad of Mount Laurel. I spray our garlic spray in my wetland and garden area  to help keep the ticks and the deer that carry the infected ticks at bay, I then spray the main property on a regular basis with our barrier spray.

One of my good friends is John Engleman – the owner of Lewis Funeral Home in Moorestown NJ. If you’ve lived in this area long, you probably know or have met John. He’s the President Elect of the local rotary, a volunteer fireman, works with our community college and is an overall great guy.

Last summer, my wife and I were over at his home for dinner. Around the back of his home, he has a lovely pool and patio with lots of ivy growing — all things that mosquitoes love. Mosquitoes need water to breed and they love to hide in foliage. You can imagine, we were all getting eaten alive. John knew I had just started my mosquito spraying company – Mosquito Squad of Mount Laurel so he asked me to come over and do a spray to try it out. He was amazed at how it worked. It worked so beautifully that he signed up for the rest of the year and has already signed up for this year’s full season protection.

One of the things I was able to offer John was a free trial spray. Our mosquito and tick spray is a safe yard spray that creates a barrier around your yard to ward off mosquitoes and ticks. Ask us if you are eligible for a free spray.
